2024 NEW FORWARD APRIL 2012

I wrote 2024 during the early part of 2007, still in the Blair years and still under the shadow of the events of the 9th of September 2001. The reaction to the events of that day saw the greatest ever sustained assault on civil liberties in this country. The political climate was ominous, in the name of the War on Terror the government sought ever greater powers to control and peer into the daily lives of its citizens. There seemed to be no popular opposition to these measures and when there was not silence there was the sound of great many cheerleaders from both the right and left of the political spectrum cheering these measures on. The little resistance this trend encountered tended to be weak and largely ineffective.

Things improved temporarily after the election of the present government, who were elected partly on a ticket of improved civil liberties, however at a speed that has surprised even a seasoned old cynic like my self, this administration has returned to a default position that whenever security and liberty are weighed in the balance, the government errs on the side of security. Consequently we are drifting toward living in a state where we enjoy neither.

The novel refers to events that take place this year and therefore is something of a hostage to fortune. I still believe that its overall message is correct; it was however intended as a warning but is in danger of becoming a self fulfilling prophecy.

I am grateful to everyone who has exchanged valuable time for whatever the merits of reading this tale provide. The overwhelming readership of this book live in the United States and I would very much welcome any contact from anyone who would wish to offer feedback, exchange ideas or simply say hello. I am contactable at alextalbot116@gmail.com and I look forward to hearing from you.
