PERFIDIOUS ALBION
The British, despite
decades of self deception and self serving propaganda to the contrary, have
never been widely trusted in the world.
The British will promise one
thing to your face, whilst conspiring against you behind your back. A smile
more often than not is designed to conceal a well hidden stiletto; the
carefully constructed lie presented as fact. Theft committed as often with a
fountain pen as a sword. This double dealing and back stabbing have long been
the experience of dealing with the British for the inhabitants of foreign lands.
From Sykes–Picot, to Munich , from Suez to Cyprus from Diego Garcia [1] to Kenya ,[2] British treachery has been experienced the world over. The honourable British
Gentleman a self serving fiction, the true experience of the British being encapsulated
by Flashman not Tom Brown.
I thought of this when
watching The Prime Minister trying to slip out of the moral obligation we owe
those who supported us in Afghanistan from settling here following British withdrawal.[3] Leaving them in Afghanistan will leave them to the mercy of the Taliban.
‘Many of the 500 or so interpreters employed by the Ministry of Defence in Afghanistan say they have received serious threats to their lives, while some have already fled to the UK to claim asylum.’[4]
Those who avoid being
murdered by Taliban hit squads, in reprisal for being ‘collaborators,’ will live
a life as hunted and haunted individuals. The reason that Cameron does not want
to admit them to the UK can only characterised as racist, pandering to the
current UKIP generated hysteria about immigration. Mr Cameron’s solution is to
stuff their pockets with silver and shove them out of sight, whilst all the
time pretending that his real concern is with the future of Afghanistan .
'On
Wednesday, Mr Cameron told the BBC that he had asked officials to draw up an
offer to encourage the interpreters to stay at home and rebuild their country.'[5]
This disgusting little
manoeuvre, if Cameron pulls it off, will shame us all. I would say to anyone
abroad that the next time a British diplomat says “trust me,” feel for your
watch and check your small change, get any agreement in writing and watch your
back as you walk away; Etonians play dirty.
[1] Between 1968 and 1973, the
Chagossians, then numbering about 2,000 people, were expelled by the British
government to Mauritius
and Seychelles
to allow the United States
to establish a military base on the island. Today, the exiled Chagossians are
still trying to return, claiming that the forced expulsion and dispossession
was illegal
